Since early XX century, along the costs from Serchio river to the beginning of Regione Liguria there were villages of sailor-men and farmers, which during
the summer period used to wake up with nobles and rich tourists coming from Lucca and all-over Tuscany.
Paolina Buonaparte, Napoleone's sister, as well as the famous english poets Byron and Shelly used to stay in Versilia for long periods.
Gabriele D'Annunzio and Giacomo Puccini found in Versilia the inspiration for their masterpieces.
Versilia's pleasant climate and natural beauties have always actracted an increasing number of people.
Nowdays Versilia occupies the north-western part of Tuscany, between the ridge of the Apuan Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The "Riviera of Versilia", or Versilia comprehends Viareggio, Camaiore, Pietrasanta , Forte dei Marmi, Stazzema e Seravezza.
The Versilia extends for more than 20km of uninterrupted beach, equipped with more than 400 bathing stations to which are added a few kilometres of free beach managed by the local municipalities.
The climate is mild, thanks also to the bulwark made by the Apuane Alps.
We can count around 270 sunny days in the year and the medium temperature of 24,5° in the summer and 9,4° in the winter.
The coastline is divided in 4 parts: Viareggio and Torre del Lago Puccini, Lido di Camaiore, Marina di Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi
While the coastal strip offers amusement and comfort to its variety of guests, it is well worth investigating the artistic wealth, culture, history and traditions of the interior.
It is, in fact, possible to combine exciting nightlife with more gentle pursuits.
Riviera of Versilia, thanks to a wide communication facilities, is very close to many places.
Lucca and Pisa are only 20 Kms away and, generally speaking, is easibly reacheable form all over Tuscany.
Florence is some 100 kms away and in less than 3 hours-drive you can reach Genoa, Turin, Milan, Venice and Bologna.
For those who don't like cars, international airports of Pisa and Florence are very close.
